“In order for you to grow, you must be uncomfortable.” That is the motto of professor Roberto Cuatero, the owner of the Gracie Barra Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy in Jacksonville. With a background in the Marines, Cuartero wanted to continue doing productive work in his life that challenged him mentally and physically. Being uncomfortable is what challenges your mind and body to overcome whatever situation you are in and essentially grow from it. He describes Jiu-Jitsu as a way to develop that growth by teaching self-defense, stress management, and developing stoicism.
What sets the academy apart from the rest is that it’s more than just a gym; it’s a family environment that teaches you about organizational structure while allowing you to apply what you’ve learned in class to the real world. Jiu-Jitsu is for everyone and can be learned from as young as five to as old as 86.
The Gracie Barra school also offers a summer camp for kids who wish to learn the art of Jiu-Jitsu.
